Two Career Center Students Receive Commercial Contractors Association Scholarships
JACKSON, Mich.—The Commercial Contractor's Association of Jackson County recently awarded Napoleon's Dustin Bonner and Springport's Nate Miller $1,000 each to continue their education in the construction field.
In previous years, only one student received the scholarship. This year, the CCA deemed the two candidates were equally deserving in their work and leadership skills at the Career Center. Instead of splitting the award, the contractor's group decided to give each student the full scholarship.
"This scholarship shows that we believe in our community and want to support students who excel in the construction industry," said Jim Vance, representative of the Commercial Contractor's Association. "It helps to keep students and talent here in Jackson County."
Both students intend to use their scholarships to offset the cost of attending Jackson Community College next year. Miller will follow his dream to pursue a career in construction or engineering and possibly transfer to Ferris State University or Tri-State. Bonner is focused on electrical engineering and was involved in wiring much of the Career Center's on-site construction house.
"It is outstanding that we have community groups that support our students and offer incentives like this scholarship to help students achieve higher levels of accomplishment," said Jon Kopp, Career Center Construction On-Site instructor.
Both Bonner and Miller have contributed significantly to building the Career Center's on-site house project located in Three Forty Farms.
The construction program at Jackson Area Career Center has been preparing students for the workforce for over 32 years. More than 3,000 students have taken advantage of the skills training available at the center and over 30 homes have been built by Career Center students in the Jackson community.
